Happy Birthday, Buddy Boy!

EthanI didn’t think our lives could again change as drastically or wonderfully as they did when your sissy was born almost four short years ago, but you proved me wrong, E.

Like your sister, you go to bed so easily and slept through the night at an early age (though it didn’t seem like you were going to), and you both have the sweetest smiles that can melt the heart of anyone who is near you.

But that is where your similarities end.

My boy, you are into EVERYTHING, and you don’t give up easily.  You know what you want, and you’re determined to get it.  I am excited and frightened for our future and our attempts to keep up with you.  We have often said, since I think you were about 3 days old, that “1+1 does not equal 2” when it comes to kids.  That is true for the challenging moments, but also for the moments that make parenting so rewarding.  You have added a whole new dimension to our adventure together, and we are so very grateful.

I remember the day of your birth like it was yesterday.  I remember holding you for the first time, carrying you to the nursery to be weighed and measured, introducing you to Em J, taking you home, and leaving you with Mommy when Em J got sick and had to go to the hospital when you were just a few days old.  I remember your first cries, your first laughs, your first word, and your first steps.

Today we say a bittersweet goodbye to formula and rear-facing car seats, and we welcome a new chapter as you start to walk, talk, and embark on your second year.

Thank you, little prince, for joining our princess and making our lives so full, so complete.  What a fantastic year this has been, and I know we are poised for a lifetime of fantastic years to come.

Happy Birthday, E.

And congrats Mommy & Daddy – you made it through another first year! Big celebrations today!!

  2. Sorry about being a copycat, Care. I so enjoy reading your “birthday” messages to your girls, I decided to do one of my own. I hope you don’t mind me stealing your idea!
